TTP Publishes Comprehensive Facility Modification Guidelines for Maintenance and Repair of Natural Gas Vehicles

Document Details Codes & Standards Compliance, Facility Modifications & Training to Achieve Efficient, Low-Risk Fleet Vehicle Servicing

Washington, DC – After an extensive review process, The Transport Project (TTP) today released a comprehensive and updated Facility Modification Guidelines for Maintenance and Repair of Natural Gas Vehicles document. The publication is a product of TTP’s Technology & Development Committee and the Maintenance Facility Modifications Working Group. The original guide was compiled by Douglas Horne, P.E. of the former Clean Vehicle Education Foundation and last updated by the NGVAmerica Technology & Development Committee in May 2017.

The guide includes an overview of existing facility code requirements, modification recommendations, and advised personnel training for managers of maintenance repair garages.  Considerations for both minor and major service areas deployed to maintain and repair compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) fueled vehicles are provided in the guide.

“This document should become a must-use reference guide for any vehicle fleet deploying natural gas trucks and buses,” said Marty Tufte, TTP Chair and Corporate Fleet Director for WM. “Compiled by subject matter experts across multiple TTP member companies, this guide is provided to all CNG and LNG vehicle operators free of charge to enhance safety across the industry, ensure compliance with relevant standards, and promote best practices for the greatest operational success for NGV fleets of all sizes.”

Topics covered by the guide include ventilation, gas detection, sources of ignition, electrical classification, vehicle preparation for maintenance, and the maintenance and decommissioning of vehicle fuel containers. Members of the document task force include Chris Culberson of Cummins Clean Fuel Technologies, Jim Leonard of J.R. Leonard Construction Company, Leo Thomason of Alternative Fuel Vehicle Institute (AFVi), John Tiquet of WM, and Paul Sandsted, TTP’s Director of Technology and Sustainability.

TTP will host an informational safety webinar reviewing the updated Facility Modification Guideline document on Tuesday, April 14th at 1:00 p.m. ET. There is no cost to attend; pre-registration is required HERE.

TTP will offer additional fleet maintenance and safety education at two upcoming in-person events:

  • RNG Roundup at ACT Expo on Wednesday, May 6th at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, NV (more at: actexpo.com), and
  • NGV Maintenance Best Practices Forum at TTP26, the gaseous fuel industry’s annual summit, on Wednesday, July 8th at the Westin Nashville in Nashville, TN (more at: ttpsummit.org).
