TTP Publishes Comprehensive Best Practices Guide for CNG Refuse Fleets
Document Details Safety Recommendations and Operations Procedures to Achieve Efficient, Low Risk Operational Success
Washington, DC – After concluding an eighteen-month compilation process, The Transport Project (TTP) today released its new Recommended Practices for CNG Powered Refuse Trucks and the Supporting Facilities for Refueling and Maintenance procedural manual. The document is the product of a task force of TTP Technology & Development Committee member experts established to thoroughly evaluate all industry guidelines, recommended practices, and safety bulletins specific to CNG powered refuse trucks.
“This new document is among the most comprehensive collections of recommended practices within our gaseous-fueled transportation industry,” said Marty Tufte, TTP Chair and Corporate Fleet Director for WM. “Compiled by subject matter experts across multiple TTP member companies, our guide is provided to all CNG truck operators free of charge to enhance safety across the industry, ensure compliance with relevant standards, and promote best practices for the greatest operational success for fleets of all sizes.”
The growth of compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicle deployment – fueled by ultra-low-to-negative-carbon intensity (CI) renewable natural gas (RNG) – in the refuse space is a testament to great progress being made by heavy-duty truck owners and operators to improve sustainability, reduce emissions, and lower their total cost of ownership (TCO).
While the natural gas vehicle industry largely references codes and standards published by trusted standard development organizations that specify requirements for the design and configuration of CNG vehicles, there are many additional processes and procedures that fleets must consider to ensure operations run smoothly, safely, and efficiently.
The comprehensive guide includes multiple sections:
- Recommended training
- CNG fuel system inspection
- Emergency response procedures
- Defueling CNG fuel systems
- Decal placement and labeling recommendations
- Hot work safety considerations
- Maintenance facility considerations
- Inspection, testing, and maintenance of CNG-compliant shop safety systems
- Fire prevention and detection strategies at parking facilities and refueling stations
- End-of-life considerations for CNG vehicles and tanks
TTP’s Director of Technology and Development Paul Sandsted will unveil and present a report summary of the CNG Refuse guide at ACT Expo’s Exhibit Floor theater on Wednesday, April 30th at 12:40 p.m. PT in Anaheim, CA.
