Crowley Christens LNG-Powered El Coquí, Marking Innovative Milestone

Crowley has christened El Coquí, its new LNG-powered commitment class ConRo ship, that is dedicated to the U.S. mainland-Puerto Rico trade. The ceremony took place at the Port of Jacksonville and officially welcomed into service one of the first vessels of its kind powered by LNG.

El Coquí is the first of two vessels built as part of Crowley’s Commitment Class project. Constructed by VT Halter Marine in Pascagoula, Mississippi, the ship is a centerpiece of Crowley’s industry-leading supply chain solutions. She is 720 feet, 26,500 deadweight tons (DWT), and able to transport up to 2,400 twenty-foot-equivalent container units (TEUs) at a cruising speed of 22 knots.

Unique to the mainland-Puerto Rico trade, the ship features an enclosed, ventilated and weather-tight deck that can protectively carry up to 400 cars and larger vehicles.
